What to do when your student becomes your competitor?

I teach sewing and painting and I also sell things that I make. I've never considered that any of my students might copy some of my designs and start selling them as well. Everyone has the right to sell what they make, so do I really have a leg to stand on? I suppose it wouldn't be quite so bothersome if a specific item wasn't made in the exact same fabric that I used with the exact same embellishment on it. That can't be right, can it? What about making my exact design and embellishment in a different fabric? What do you think?

  1. That's awful! I would never dream of selling the same things that someone else makes, especially from someone who taught me how to do it! That would make me so mad!! But I have a feeling that you do it so much better!

  2. I hope that this isn't referring to me :( If it is I first saw this tutorial months ago @ Makeit-loveit.com and really ony shop at Joanns and Hobby Lobby for fabric so it was bound to happen with only so many fabric options available at these stores.

  3. Oh no, Danielle, not you. As far as I know, you don't make anything I've had in my Etsy shop. (Do you??? LOL) We both do bibs and burp cloths but they are totally different styles.

Luckily, even with shopping at the same stores, it's unlikely that we'll ever end up making identical items. In the hundreds of times I've taught the pillowcase classes at Joann's, I've never seen two people make the same pillowcase. There are so many fabric options that it never seems to happen. So don't worry about us shopping at the same stores. We'll be fine. :)
